The window was installed as part of the major refubishment programme for Edinburgh City Chambers which is home to the Lord Provost, and the City councillors. It draws its inspiration from the Scottish Enlightenement of the 18th Century, when there was a flowering of architectural, intellectual, scientific and cultural ideas. The design combines drawings, original engravings and plans, some from the Royal Botanic Garden, with contemporary writings, including lines from Burns celebrating Nature as muse. The inclusion of the thistle is a continuation of the original early 20th century brief.
The project Architects were Smith Scott Mullan Associates, and the art was project managed by Art in Partnership. The works were part of the 'Fit for Future Initiative'
